Philosophie

TOM JOULE
The Tom Joule story began in 1989, when Tom Joule started selling clothing on a stand at a country show in Leicestershire. Tom would constantly brave the elements in pursuit of delivering traditional clothing with a twist – that drive of wanting to offer his customers something different by blending style with practically, helped Tom Joule stand out from the crowd.
Tom Joule’s unique use of colour and print – all of which are hand-drawn by its in-house team – as well as unexpected details, really set Tom Joule apart. The brand is always looking to connect with its customers on an emotional level through being inspired by nature, connecting with life’s happy feelings and embracing quality time. This approach, along with a drive to surprise and delight its customers with something unexpected, has been central to the brand’s success and remains at the heart of everything Tom Joule creates.

TOM JOULE DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM THE GREAT BRITISH COASTLINE FOR ITS

SS21 WOMENSWEAR COLLECTION

The inspiration for Spring Summer 2021 led the Tom Joule design team from the countryside to the coast, visiting beaches and cottage gardens fringed with wildflowers. This season’s collection takes influence from the sights of traditional maritime activities and quaint seaside harbour towns hidden amongst the British coastline. It’s here you find a kaleidoscope of colour; from multicoloured beach huts and stripe-filled deck chairs, to bright bobbing buoys and natural flora and fauna. Throughout the range you will find a nod to the hues and textures of the shoreside, from its colour palettes and fabrics right down to the hidden details the Tom Joule brand is renowned for.

The SS21 range has been built entirely around original artworks created by the Tom Joule in-house artists who took some time looking back at the details that have surprised and delighted Tom Joule customers the most over the years. This research led to a fascination with fabrics, stand-out prints and mood-boosting colour palettes, resulting in an uplifting collection that is optimistic, bright and fresh.

Founded in the fields of Great Britain, the Tom Joule brand has always been conscious of its impact on the environment and this season sees its most sustainable range yet:  a collection of summer t-shirts and vests are crafted from beautiful 100% BCI cotton, making sure the fabric is soft and breathable.  On outerwear, recycled wadding has been used across the Warm Welcome styles that are new for SS21 and, in other categories, Eco Vero – a special branded viscose yarn that uses less water to produce and is therefore much kinder to the environment – has been introduced.

The season begins with new iterations of the iconic Harbour Top, which has become synonymous with the Tom Joule brand. This time it arrives in the season’s statement inky floral print, featuring berry tones and bright pink pops, in either an all-over design or carefully placed upon a crème striped base. This ultra-feminine print’s rich colours can also be seen across a range of woven and Jersey pieces throughout the SS21 collection, all of which can be paired perfectly with Tom Joule’s complimentary solid bottoms and knitwear, creating the perfect capsule. With a focus on always looking for innovative ways to improve the quality of products, the Harbour has also seen some technical improvements for SS21: the style now goes through an additional washing process during production which allows the garment to retain its shape for much longer whilst significantly improving its washability and longevity.

The cooler months see the launch of some exciting new Warm Welcome and Right as Rain outerwear pieces. The introduction of the Eve single breasted coat offers a soft and stylish wool blend in two colourways: gold and grey check. Eve is a smart, tailored style and brings with it the surprising and delightful detailing Tom Joule is known for, including a contrast undercollar, conversational interior print and printed internal binding. The Canterbury and Canterbury Long coats allow customers to add luxury and warmth to those colder days. These stylish padded jackets arrive in January and are as functional as they are beautiful, with a flattering feminine fit that nips in at the waist. Available in bright pops of red, soft blue and pale grey, the Canterbury has recycled wadding, gloss spot lining, high shine metal work and statement taping inside the placket.

Based on the success of the previous season, November sees the return of the Loxley. This long length waterproof parka offers ultimate protection from the elements. Complete with a jersey lined hood, drawstring waist (to give you a flattering shape or accommodate extra layers) and lots of other stylish and thoughtful details, it will almost have you crossing your fingers for rainy days. Available in Khaki and the season’s hero floral print, along with a bright red colour option as we head into January. Brand new for SS21 is the Loxley Cosy, available in navy and black. This style has all the benefits of the Loxley but this time with a half quilt, half fleece lining and a cosy hood for those chilly, rainy days. New to the Right as Rain collection is the Taunton. Waterproof and breathable, the Taunton’s fabric has a very premium feel and a slight sheen. It also has a detachable hood, functional toggles to create shape at the waist, stylish high shine trims and internal detailing.

A Tom Joule favourite, the Miranda jumper, is back for spring and bursting with as much charm as ever. New intarsia designs and signature detailing combined with a slimmer-fitting crew-neck block make this a flattering and characterful choice for everyday wear. This season’s animal-themed styles include a whippet dog on a red base, whilst the Miranda Luxe offers a mini beaded duck on a green backdrop and a statement embellished bee on a cream stripe.

Taking a deep dive into the Tom Joule archive unearthed some hidden treasures, including a fascinating midscale multi-colour floral with complete coverage that evoked a wonderfully heritage yet contemporary feel. For SS21, the design team took this print and reimagined it in fun, feminine colours that has now been used across a selection styles, and looks particularly striking on the Winslet dress, Hayden jersey tunic and the bias cut Coletta skirt. Also being re-introduced is the much loved, classic Beachy sweatshirt. This easy-wearing wardrobe staple has been upgraded for SS21, with new details including the rib side panel, contrast back neck trims and taped placket. The Beachy will be available in navy, white and pink.

March sees the addition of another hero floral print, this time showcasing blooming peonies and wildflowers on khaki and crème bases; a lovely nod to summer. This story flourishes perfectly across a selection of new linen pieces, including the Kimia sundress. Kimia is set to be a summer staple and features a button front placket with a shirred back detail for an easy and comfortable fit. This sleeveless dress has somewhat of a nostalgic feel yet can easily portray a contemporary look when paired with pumps. This is truly a style that sings of summer and will be perfect for every sun-filled mood and moment.

Another show-stopping summer dress, fit for any garden party or barbeque, is the Eileen. This style skims through the bodice, blousons at the waist and pleats softly through the skirt for a really flattering, flowing silhouette. Available in either a charming white floral strewn across a red base or a delicate navy ditsy with playful pops of pink.

Just because we’ve reached summer, doesn’t mean we can rely on the weather! With this in mind, Tom Joule has created the lightweight Devon Coastal jacket. Featuring nautical details such as the contrast undercollar, anchor tab and buttons, mariners’ grade cotton, a striped binding and even a lobster print lining to amuse and charm the customer. For those cooler evenings, layer up with Vicky, the new summer weight linen and viscose blend jumper, perfect for popping on over a t-shirt, or pairing with denim for a laid-back look.
